Always remember to look both ways before crossing the street!

UNKLE is mostly a vehicle for James Lavelle to collaborate with other artists. “Psyence Fiction” was the first (and best) full album released under the name, and it became a must-have album in 1998 (I’d argue due mostly to DJ Shadow’s production work). Radiohead’s Thom Yorke is on vocals here, with his usual melancholy whining. The piano and muted drums really complement him though, and the result is actually a beautiful little song.

Director Jonathan Glazer’s talent is on full display throughout the video, in terms of both special effects camera-work and storytelling. The pacing is brilliant. As you watch this poor crazy guy get beat up, you are drawn in out of sheer morbid curiosity. Then, as the drums cut out and the man stops walking, you sense something changing. The final shot is just amazing, one of those “what did I just see” moments that compels you to look for deeper meaning.
