Nine Inch Nails – Closer
And now for a song that has a disturbing number of teenage girls dancing to it on YouTube...
This video is Not Safe For Work, though maybe the bar for disturbing imagery and nudity has raised since 1994.
While some may not classify Nine Inch Nails as electronic music, some would be WRONG. A large portion of industrial overlaps with electronic music, and the works of Trent Reznor are very much in that space. “The Downward Spiral” was released in perhaps the most formative time for my personal music development: Freshman year of high school. This song and video may be the greatest influence on my tastes even to this day. Without it, I might still be listening to Metallica’s “Black Album” over and over again.
The only thing more amazing than this song getting radio play at all is the video getting MTV play at all. Mark Romanek’s work has always been centered more around colorful visuals and interesting tableaux (as opposed to special effects or storytelling), and this is perhaps his masterpiece. After viewing, it’s hard to separate the song from the video; that’s always a sign that the director is doing something right.
