Never date a girl who can beat you up.

This video is directed by Wong Kar-wai, a pretty famous movie director in Hong Kong, and features a couple of pretty famous Asian actors/models. But to my untrained eye, it feels fresh compared to other videos out there.

If you read between the lines, you’ll see that this is actually a familiar story of love gone wrong. We’ve got a guy in love, a girl who cheats on him, and the aftermath. Our guy tries to erase all the signs that the girl has left laying around, but nothing can erase what’s in his mind.

As for the girl, her reasons are a bit ambiguous and open to interpretation. She’s crying in one frame; this is before or after the indiscretion? What drove her away? They are together at the end, for a time… is she saying goodbye? Does this bring closure?

I just love the imagery in this one. The movements in the water, the tattoo symbol being painted everywhere, the physical battle between our couple. The DJ Shadow track itself adds even more layers.
