If I've learned one thing in life, it's "Don't mess with Bruce Willis".

I wouldn’t call myself a huge Gorillaz fan, but I’ve always liked them a lot. They’ve taken the “virtual band” gimmick and made it their own.

The first reason the band works so well is that very talented musicians are involved, talented enough to be able to blend rock, hip hop, and electronic pretty seamlessly (Dan the Automator and Danger Mouse worked on prior albums).

The second reason is that the fictional band features strong characters living in a strong, coherent universe (provided by comic artist Jamie Hewlett). I mean, I guess Alvin and the Chipmunks were strong characters, but it’s not quite the same.

It’s the little details that make this video interesting. There’s no explicit backstory, but you get a pretty good idea even if you don’t know the characters. Murdoc’s twitching as he drives, the way he rolls up the window before getting shot, 2D’s haunted expressions as he contemplates where it all went wrong (whatever it was). Bruce Willis’s (?!?) stare down and maniacal laughter that reaffirms that he should not be messed with.

All in all, it’s a very interesting video. The song, as hinted at earlier, is a perfect blend of electronic, hip hop, and rock. Heavy on the electronic. Very nice. This is all hot off the presses btw, and I don’t know about you, but my appetite for the full album is officially whetted.
